The GL65 is one of the best MSI thin and light gaming laptops you can purchase. MSI spearheads both the thin and lightweight gaming environment, but with the Leopard 10SFK-062 have allowed it to carry some weight to accommodate more gaming power.

With the screen brightness set to 100cd / m2, with the 1st backlight of the keyboard, on the Super battery saver mode in the MSI Dragon Centre profile, I got 5 hours and 7 minutes in PC Mark Applications Battery Life. 7. 2020 Premium Flagship Dell G7 15.6 Inch FHD IPS Gaming Laptop

2020 Premium Flagship Dell G7 15.6 Inch FHD IPS Gaming Laptop

The Dell G7 15 offers a wide variety of component options starting at $900 for entry-level and mainstream gamers and it’s all wrapped up in an attractive and relatively thin and light case. The G7 15 is an upgraded version with a thinner, and lighter all-metal chassis, higher-end component and display options, and a four-zone RGB LED backlit keyboard.

The issue that the G7 has is it doesn’t differentiate itself enough from the G5 for those on a budget. And for those less restricted by price, the Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card pushes the price up so that it’s not too far off from the nicer-looking and more capable Alienware m15. Unless you really want the RTX card’s support for ray tracing or DLSS that improves lighting and detail realism in supported games, you’re better off getting the G7 with a GTX 1660 Ti chip, which performs nearly as well for less money. In other words, if you’re going to spend for the RTX 2060, you might as well spend it on a better laptop.

That’s not to say the Dell G7 15 is something you should stay away from. Oddly enough, the Dell G7 15 currently starts at $900 for seemingly the same configuration as the base G5 15. In this case, the G7 is certainly the way to go. The metal case does make it feel more premium than the G5. The keyboard is comfortable for typing and gaming and, because Dell used white markings instead of the G5’s blue, you can read the keys easily with the backlight off.

Basically, if you want the performance of an Alienware for less money and in a body that doesn’t look as much like a typical aggressive gaming laptop, the Dell G7 15 is certainly worth considering.

  • Processor: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-9750H
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 256GB
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060
  • Display: 15.6-inch
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home
  • Battery Life: Up to 4 hours
  • Weight: 5.82 lbs

  • Strong overall and gaming performance
  • Striking design
  • Good battery life

  • Dim display
  • Shallow keyboard

8. Razer Blade Stealth 13 Ultrabook Gaming Laptop

Razer Blade Stealth 13 Ultrabook Gaming Laptop

The Razer Blade Stealth 13 or the “the world’s first gaming ultrabook.” that would really rather you think of it as a gaming computer. To its credit, its dedicated GPU, looks, and 120 Hz screen back up that image. But while it’s perfect for older games and light exports titles, testing shows that it’s still firmly a productivity machine first.

The Blade Stealth 13 does stand out with its style and high frame rate display, but its size and specs put it in competition with the likes of MSI Prestige 14. With most modern games, it simply can’t keep up. It does have its niche, but what matters here is productivity. Although it may try to sidestep this issue with branding, we found that other, cheaper ultraportable beat it on what the category does best.

Under the hood, the Blade Stealth 13 packs an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU which is an Ice Lake processor that launched late last year, which makes it a little old but still plenty relevant for the ultrabook category. However, it does leave the Blade Stealth 13 at a disadvantage against one of the few other ultrabooks with a dedicated GPU, the MSI Prestige 14. This machine packs a Comet Lake Intel Core i7-10710U and an Nvidia GTX 1650 Max-Q. The Blade Stealth 13 has a slightly more powerful GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q GPU, but our numbers show it still struggles to keep up in productivity.

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-1065G7
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Storage: 512 GB
  • Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650
  • Display: 13.3 inch
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home
  • Weight: 3.1 pounds

  • Sturdy, compact, beautiful build
  • Colorful keyboard with updated layout
  • Powerful gaming specs with a 120Hz screen

  • Expensive compared to portable competitors
  • Performance can’t match larger gaming laptops
  • Large top and bottom bezels (by current standards)

9. MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE-442 15.6″ 240Hz 3ms Ultra Thin and Light Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7-10875H RTX2060 16GB 512GB NVMe SSD Win10PRO VR Ready

MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE-442 15.6" 240Hz 3ms Ultra Thin and Light Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7-10875H RTX2060 16GB 512GB NVMe SSD Win10PRO VR Ready

The MSI GS66 Stealth laptop is practical, thanks to its great USB and Thunderbolt connectivity on the outside, and both Wi-Fi 6 and 2.5Gbps Ethernet on the inside. This machine is a little heavier and thicker but it does have good ergonomics, though. Its keyboard is comfortable, fast and well-spaced, and the trackpad is wide and responsive.

This laptop has an impressive display, too. The 240Hz refresh rate is lightning-quick, and it works best in e sports games, where having such pace delivers a decent advantage. Quality is excellent, too, with impressive contrast and color accuracy.

The screen doesn’t have G-Sync, which means single-player games will be a little smoother on laptops that do include Nvidia’s technology. On the inside, the Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU delivers good gaming pace, with enough speed here to handle E sports games at the speeds demanded by the 240Hz screen. It’ll also run single-player games at smooth frame rates and high graphics settings. It sports Intel’s 10th Gen Core i7-10750H which is great for gaming, photo-editing, everyday computing and relatively demanding work tasks.

The MSI GS66 Stealth is inconsistent in thermal tests, too; it’s no louder than any rival, but the CPU gets too hot and its speed throttles, which hampers its working ability. It does make up for its good score in battery tests.

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-10750H
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 512GB SSD
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060
  • Display: 15.6-inches
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro
  • Battery Life: Up to 6 hours
  • Weight: 4.6 pounds

  • Fantastic 240Hz screen
  • Solid components throughout
  • Good battery life, ergonomics and connectivity

  • Rivals have more CPU power
  • Some temperature issues
  • 240Hz screen is often unnecessary

10. CUK ASUS TUF506IV Gaming Laptop PC (AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB GPU, 15.6″ Full HD 144Hz, Windows 10 Home)

The Asus TUF A15 is one of the most exciting gaming laptops on our list, but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect.

For a start, it looks like a pretty run-of-the-mill gaming laptop – there are no flashy design choices, as is the case with its Zepherous siblings, which offer powerful performance in slim line packages. Nor does it pack the highest of high-end components for gaming performance to rival the best gaming PCs.

What it makes so excited about the Asus TUF A15 (also known as the Asus F506IV) is the fact that it features one of the latest AMD Ryzen 4000 mobile processors that have been wowing us recently, along with the excellent Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU, to create an affordable gaming laptop that offers brilliant performance without causing your wallet irreparable damage.

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 4800H Processor

  • Storage: 1TB
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660
  • Display: 15.6-inch
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home
  • Weight: 2.22 kg

  • Great balance of components
  • Excellent design and build
  • Strong performance
  • Good value

  • Very loud fans
  • Sub four-figure ray-tracing laptops are on their way

How to Choose The Right Gaming Computer For You

As we mentioned, $1,500 is a magical number when it comes to gaming laptops. At this price point, today’s most popular titles are easily playable, even on the highest settings.

That said this list consisted of the best laptops under $1,500. Which means the starter least expensive options are closer to the $1,000 mark? Moreover, there are often slight variants between models that are close in price. So how do you choose the best one for your setup? We’ve broken the answer down into the three sections below.

  • CPU & GPU – Perhaps the most important place to start is the CPU and GPU. Choosing a newer Intel i7 model is a great place to start though older variants are often just as good, in terms of the GPU, any laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce card ought to do you just fine.
  • Memory & Storage – Crucial to your overall performance is memory and storage. You’ll generally want to pick a model that offers over 8 gigs of RAM for best results. DDR4 is pretty much the standard here in 2020. In terms of storage, an SSD is best. And if you can swing it, an NVMe SSD is even better. Hybrid options that include SSDs for loading and HDDs for storage are also a worthwhile option.
  • Brand – Your last major decision lies with the brand. If you’re attached to any particular model or series, you can skip this part and move down the list. But it’s worth noting that choosing a relevant brand is typically a smart move. Companies like ASUS and MSI are big enough to offer great warranties against defects and handle your complaints. You may find better value in lesser-known brands like Sager but quality control may be more of an issue.

While researching the topic I found a couple of references that had very good advice for people buying a laptop.  The first thing I would recommend is to be an educated shopper, research the products before going to the store so you know what is true and what’s not so true when talking to a sales representative.

The best advice I found was simply to know what you are looking for before you make a final decision. There are many different brands of laptops, and each brand has many different models, and each model has many different ways it can be customized. You should find out what you will be using the laptop for so you know what you will need and what you won’t use.  If you want a laptop for gaming you would want one with a widescreen and a huge, heavy battery.  All in all, I learned a lot about advantages and disadvantages of many different styles of laptop computers.
